Control Components Inc. site earns California Voluntary Protection Program (Cal/VPP) Star Status for Exemplary Health and Safety

15 May 2014

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA., 15th May 2014 – Control Components Inc. in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA (CCI RSM) announces that after a rigorous process, they have become the 73rd site to receive the Cal/VPP Star designation. CCI RSM is one of only four valve manufacturers in the United States to receive this honor, which is the highest level of recognition bestowed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Nationally there are approximately 2,300 VPP Star sites spread across a variety of industries.

The Cal/VPP designation recognizes employers and employees for implementing health and safety programs that go beyond minimal standards and provide the best protection against occupational hazards. Program elements include management commitment, worksite analysis, health and safety training, and hazard prevention/control. Successful applicants are considered leaders in their industry and are exempt from Cal/OSHA programmed inspections.

The process at CCI RSM officially began January 2013 with an application to Cal OSHA and the forming of an internal Cal/VPP team. In order to be considered, various eligibility criteria had to be met, including three consecutive years of injury and illness rates well below the industry average. Once the application was accepted, CCI RSM was assigned a mentor from amongst the current Cal/VPP Star sites. Throughout 2013, CCI RSM worked with the mentoring company to evaluate and complete the program elements previously mentioned. In December 2013, a four-person Cal OSHA team came to CCI RSM to conduct a week long assessment. This comprehensive audit resulted in several action items, which were closed out within 90 days. In April 2014, the Cal OSHA team returned and confirmed successful completion of all action items.

This prestigious designation only marks the beginning of a continual improvement journey, as the CCI RSM team continues to build a culture of accountability, resulting in health and safety excellence. “Our partnership with Cal OSHA through the VPP program is an important milestone in our continuous improvement plan,” said Charles Merrimon, President of CCI Americas. “Ultimately, our efforts here are about the safety of our employees, and creating the best value and experience for our customers.”
